Welcome to our class blog! This is where you will hear about some of the activities that we do during the week. There is almost always a video to enjoy. You can also see more frequent pictures often on Instagram at mrs_poor_ucs or you can access it by clicking on the right side of this blog.
During the first month of school, we roll in slowly and our main focus is to build our community. We take the time to foster relationships and get to know expectations and routines. This crew is already rocking it all! First graders are guiding our new kindergartners along the way. What a wonderful week we had together. We are learning about the different areas in our classroom and the materials through engaging art projects.
Students enjoyed exploration with math manipulatives this week. They explored pattern blocks, geo-blocks, unifix cubes, geoboards, power polygons, buttons, and stones. On Friday, first graders went to Mrs. Hackett's room to check out where their Math class will be located for this year. I will be teaching the Kindergarteners which will be a lovely small group where they will be able to access the Kindergarten curriculum.
At the start of the year and throughout, we do the important work of social-emotional learning. This work helps children develop a healthy sense of self and positive peer relations, that will continue throughout their lives and help them to be thoughtful citizens. We read books and do follow-up activities that practice these concepts. This past week we discussed why staying in a group is important at school and why following the "group plan" is also important. At school and at home there are times we are part of a group and being part of a group means that we are thinking of each other and often doing cooperative work. The group plan might be sitting on the rug at school during group time or it could be sitting at the table for dinner at home! Of course, finding times when everyone can do their own plan is important too!
Looking forward to another great week ahead!
