 Greetings, Earthlings (our W.O.W)!

This week, students continued to explore the wonders of space by researching a topic of their choice. We’re excited to begin another digital project with Mr. Weber next week, which will be showcased at our All-School Meeting on Friday! On Thursday, Ms. Neeson taught a great lesson on stars and constellations. We wrapped up the week by having students create their own constellations, name them, and craft a story to go along with their creations.

First Grade Math:
This week, students wrapped up our unit on missing addend problems. Our next focus will be on fractions. We will continue practicing fact fluency while exploring equal parts, halves, and quarters.

Kindergarten Math:
This week, we began a new unit, focusing on identifying attributes and sorting people and objects based on specific characteristics. Students also practiced counting and comparing the number of objects in different groups.

Field Trip Annoncement!
We are excited to announce that we will be heading to Shelburne Farms on Thursday, June 12th to explore the farmyard! Permission slips will be sent home soon, and we’d love for a few chaperones to join us on this adventure!

Spring Has Sprung: A Time of Celestial Wonders and Growing Readers

Spring is finally here! The season of renewal, growth, and change has arrived with the Spring Equinox, where day and night share equal time. This marks a moment of balance in the year, signaling the shift toward longer, sunnier days ahead. Yahoo! The signs of spring are beginning to pop up, like the "conk-la-ree" song of the Red Winged Black Bird! Have you heard it?

This week’s weather has truly captured how unpredictable spring can be. We’ve had it all—rain, snow, wind, warm days, and chilly ones too. There have been some pretty neat celestial events happening in the sky. Between the Spring Equinox and the recent eclipse, it’s been an exciting time to tie in these cosmic happenings with our space unit in class. We’ve been exploring the vast (our W.O.W) solar system. The students have had a blast learning about the Sun, and the patterns we observe with its movement across the sky. They’ve also been studying the Moon and its phases.

In our writing, we’ve been diving into the world of opinions. Students have been learning how to express their personal thoughts and ideas in writing, which is much different than the teaching books we have been working on.

In Reading, students did some book shopping. Students picked out fresh, new books at their own reading levels, and it’s been such a joy to watch them get lost in stories they’re truly enjoying. They are all beginning to recognize themselves as readers!πŸ‘

In First grade math, students are continuing to work on missing addend word problems. In addition to that work, students also created flashcards of basic addition facts. These flashcards came home this week with a letter about the importance of fact automaticity and fun ways to practice those facts.

In K. math, students continue to examine word problems, deciding what it is asking "Do I subtract or add?" and using numbers, pictures, and words to solve the equations.

Happy Spring! πŸŒΈπŸ“šπŸŒž

Space, Reading Party, & Warmer Weather!

New Science Unit On Space!

In our latest science unit, we’ve been diving into the exciting world of the sun, the moon, and all the celestial wonders surrounding us. But we’re not just focusing on the basics—we’re taking a full, cosmic journey into space! Who doesn’t love learning about planets, stars, and everything that makes our universe so spectacular?  Students had a blast πŸš€ when we collaborated with Mrs. Aucter for integrated art.  Together, we challenged our students to create their very own solar system model, students had to use snow and spray bottles to build their models!  Stay tuned for more cosmic fun! πŸͺπŸŒžπŸŒ’πŸŒ•πŸŒ™

Writing Celebration!

After weeks of research, writing, and editing, we celebrated their accomplishments with a special “cave reading” activity. Students grabbed their blankets and flashlights and settled in for a cozy reading session! Thank you for supporting your student with the blankets and flashlights!

First Grade Math

First graders have been working on True/False problems. Next week they will start to solve missing addend problems.  Example:  Sam had 6 marbles in a jar.  Sally gave him some more and now Sam has 11 marbles.  How many marbles did Sally give him?  Students have discussed how to set up this type of problem in an equation ( 6 + _ = 11) and next week we’ll discuss how this can be turned into a subtraction equation.

Kindergarten Math

Kindergartners have been working on recognizing, representing, and solving subtraction problems.  They are developing strategies for solving these types of story problems by using numbers and pictures to represent the story and the solution.
