A photo from a trail in my backwoods
Living in Vermont during the fall is like living in a gorgeous painting! We are so lucky to experience such beauty all around us! 🍂
This week, students continued building their letter and sound knowledge while growing their collection of heart words or power words. They are learning to recognize and use a, I, the, to, do, and like in their reading and writing. This week, students put their new skills to work by writing about what they like to eat and what they like to do!
In math, we kicked off the week with an introduction to measurement! Students grabbed rulers and went on a hunt for objects that were shorter than, taller than, or the same length as their ruler. We will continue exploring measurement throughout the year in kindergarten math.
On Thursday, Mr. Weber joined us for math and introduced students to Happy Numbers, our district’s digital math resource. One of the great things about this program is that it meets students where they are in their math learning and builds on their individual skills. It’s a wonderful tool for differentiating instruction, and we’ll be using it at least once a week!
During ECO, we headed out for a beautiful fall hike, enjoyed a picnic in the field, and then made our way back down to the Den. We spent some time exploring and even did a little painting on yet another wedding leftover! What was once a seating chart has now been transformed into a display of gorgeous kindergarten masterpieces. 🎨🍁

What a fantastic week of learning and growing together!
Students wrapped up our Civics unit with a garden service project. We weeded, harvested some lingering veggies, and, of course, had plenty of fun raking and jumping in leaves! After school, I dropped off some zucchinis at the park's sharing shed down the road. It felt great to share some of our harvest with the community.
In Literacy, we are introducing 2–3 letters each week, and we can already spell and read several CV and CVC words using m, s, a, t, and i. We have been spending a lot of time practicing proper letter formation and remembering to start our letters at the top. We are also continuing to build our understanding of print concepts and expand our knowledge about scientists and the work they do. We even took some time to see if we could come up with our own inventions after being inspired by the book Whoosh!: A Story About Lonnie Johnson, a man who invented the Super Soaker as well as did some important work for NASA. It was fun to think like inventors and imagine ways we could create something new!
In Math, we continue to practice number formation, counting quantities, and representing numbers in different ways. We also began working with a 10-frame, a frame that can hold 10 objects and will eventually help us recognize and understand different number combinations that make 10.
